Earshot Conversations about how things get made

About this demo

The audio is real, and it is not ours

This is a theme demonstration. The shows, the hosts and the episode descriptions are invented — no real podcast, person or organisation is depicted.

The audio, however, is genuine spoken word: short excerpts from public-domain recordings made by LibriVox volunteers, used here as placeholder so that the waveforms and transcripts on this demo are measurements of something real rather than decoration. They are readings of out-of-copyright books, not conversations, which is why the words do not match the episode titles.

The waveforms are measured

Every scrub bar on this site is the actual shape of the actual file, computed by decoding the audio and taking the RMS of four hundred slices of it. That is the same calculation the theme performs in the editor’s browser when a real podcaster attaches a file.

The transcripts are machine transcriptions of that audio

They were produced by an automatic speech recogniser running against these very files, which is why clicking a line plays the words next to it. They contain the sort of mistakes automatic transcription makes.
